If youre looking for a plant that brings a “wow” factor to your hanging baskets or rock walls, Cotyledon pendens, or Cliff Cotyledon, is a succulent youll fall in love with. This South African native is a trailing masterpiece, with plump, teardrop-shaped leaves of powdery pistachio green that develop stunning red margins when bathed in full sun. Its a vigorous grower, sending out cascading stems that can reach up to 2 feet long, eventually forming a lush, curtain-like display. Mid-summer brings another surprise: large, bell-shaped flowers in shades of coral and orange-red that dangle like tiny lanterns. Because this beauty is naturally toxic if ingested, it acts as a fantastic animal-resistant addition to your yard; deer and rabbits typically give it a wide berth, preferring to snack on something a bit more palatable. It’s a hardy, water-wise choice that rewards a little sunshine with a whole lot of personality.
