Syringa intermedia Blue Hyacinth is a small to medium deciduous shrub displaying purple-pink buds that open to attractive soft mauve-blue, single flowers in spring. A hybrid betweenSyringa vulgarisandSyringa oblata, this deciduous shrub flowers approximately one to two weeks earlier than common lilacs, bringing colour and scent to the garden in early to mid-spring. Its abundant flower clusters are conical and upright, with cool-toned, single florets that appear nearly blue in certain light, especially during cooler temperatures. The long-lived ornamental shrub has green heart-shaped leaves that may turn bronze in autumn. It makes a beautiful specimen shrub, informal screen, or fragrant addition to a spring border.
